What is mediation?

I am a mediator. Mediation is a powerful process and experience. I know that, first-hand, having been a part of a mediation several years ago for a family business. I empathize with the emotions someone is feeling before a mediation; it’s an odd mix of frustration, exhaustion, anger, and anguish - and hope; hope that this mediation will serve as the last golden opportunity to move forward towards a solution each party can live with without committing seriously to litigation.

I can also attest to the peace of mind that comes when you reach a solution as a result of a mediation, and you’re able to experience some closure and finality.

As a certified Mediator, my approach is a balance of pragmatism and compassion; heart, soul, and strategy. It’s not all that far off from how I choose to practice law - with trust, transparency, and the sincere desire to create an environment where all parties feel comfortable, safe, cared for, and heard.

How I practice mediation

An open and understanding environment.

I create a safe, non-judgmental space where we work towards a healthy resolution - no coercion, no pressure. I see my role as that of a lighthouse bringing mutual parties to the same spot safely and confidently through facilitation of understanding and creating a space where parties can hear each other.

Empowerment.

Empowerment is an important feeling because it brings power and peace in one fell swoop. However, it can only happen when we take ownership of what we create. In the case of mediation, parties must come to the table feeling empowered to work together to create a solution that works for everyone. You are in the driver’s seat. And no one can coerce you to take a deal you’re not comfortable with or you cannot live with. When you come to the table with that feeling, there’s a sense of peace - and hope for what’s possible.

Active listening.

I foster dialogue by actively seeking to understand both parties first before creatively working towards a resolution that both parties can live with well.

Integrity, trust, and empathy.

As with my approach to law, I lead with values that move conversations and understanding forward as you work towards a potential solution.
